CNA Clinical Skills Test Prep

Brush Up on Required Skills

The CNA skills exam is the hands-on portion of the certification test. The exact list of skills tested varies a bit by state, but most states follow the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) guidelines, which cover 25 core skills. During the exam, you’ll usually be tested on 5 randomly selected skills (with handwashing almost always included).

Here’s the full list of CNA skills you may be tested on:

  1. Hand Hygiene (Handwashing)
  2. Applying One Knee-High Elastic Stocking (TED Hose)
  3. Assists with Use of Bedpan
  4. Cleans Upper or Lower Denture
  5. Counts and Records Radial Pulse
  6. Counts and Records Respirations
  7. Donning and Removing PPE (Gown and Gloves)
  8. Dresses Client with Affected (Weak) Arm

  24. Provides Nail Care for One Hand (in some states)
  25. Performs Range of Motion for Elbow and Wrist (in some states)

What to Expect

  • Always tested: Hand hygiene is either a separate skill or required during other skills.
  • Random selection: You’ll be asked to perform 4–5 of the above skills on a mannequin or volunteer.
  • Scoring: Each skill has critical steps (safety, infection control, communication) you must perform correctly to pass. Missing a critical step usually means failing that skill.

CNA Clinical Skills Test Overview

The CNA certification exam also includes a skills evaluation, where you’ll demonstrate hands-on abilities in front of an evaluator. You may be asked to take blood pressure, transfer a patient, or provide mouth care, among other essential tasks.

While our practice tests focus on the written portion, strengthening your knowledge through our quizzes makes the clinical part easier, because you’ll better understand the reasoning behind each procedure.
