Overview

Emotional and Mental Health Needs – supporting well-being and compassion

Topics Covered

Exam questions may cover topics such as supporting patients with dementia, identifying signs of depression, or using therapeutic communication. You might also be asked how to handle situations where a patient is withdrawn, distressed, or showing signs of anxiety. CNAs are not responsible for diagnosing mental health conditions, but they play a vital role in observing, reporting, and offering comfort.

Tips for Success

To do well in this section, focus on treating every patient with kindness and respect. That includes actively listening, using calming communication, and offering reassurance without making promises you cannot keep. Safety is also part of emotional care, so CNAs must recognize when a patient may be at risk of harming themselves or others and immediately report it to the nurse.

Pointers for Study

Preparing for this part of the test means reviewing common emotional and mental health challenges seen in healthcare settings. Practice role-playing scenarios where you provide supportive responses, and study phrases that show empathy without judgment. Understanding how emotional care connects to dignity and overall well-being will strengthen your readiness for both the exam and real-world caregiving.
